What Is Gout?
Monday, 14 October 2019 00:00Research has indicated that gout may be common among men who are over forty years of age. It often causes severe pain and discomfort, and is considered to be a disabling form of arthritis. It can target individuals who are overweight, or people who have medical conditions that can include diabetes and high blood pressure. Additionally, genetics may play a significant role in developing gout. This ailment can occur from having excess uric acid in the blood, and may come from eating foods that have elevated purine levels. This may cause crystals to develop and lodge in the joints of the big toe. These types of foods can include red meat, shellfish, and drinks that are alcoholic or have high sugar levels. There may be lifestyle changes that can be implemented which may help in reducing the risk of developing gout. These can consist of eating healthy foods, and practicing a gentle exercise routine. If you have gout, it is strongly advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.
People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.
Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
